DAVID, THE DETECTIVE

It was David’s birthday, his best day of the year. Mummy and Daddy sang him a happy birthday song before he got out of bed. He had egg sandwiches and hot chocolate, his favourite breakfast. Ellie got him a storybook, and Reva got him a pen. His birthday cake was large with 8 blue candles to blow out.

It was the perfect birthday.

David was about to get a second slice of cake when Daddy called him. They were going for a ride.

“Where are we going?” David asked.

“It’s a surprise,” Daddy said, smiling..

“A surprise–” thought David. “I wonder what it could be.”

So he asked,

“Daddy, what’s the surprise?”

But Daddy wouldn’t tell him.

“It wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you," Daddy said.

David smiled, there was a mystery to be solved, and it was a job for David, the mystery solver. That sounded really good to him.

He would look for clues.

“We’re going to the ice cream shop,” he wrote in his detective pad. “We drove around the corner, the road that leads to the ice cream shop. The surprise must be ice cream," he wrote, just as the car stopped in front of the ice cream shop.

“Mystery solved!” David said to himself, smiling from ear to ear. They both went inside and got some ice cream.

“Thanks for the surprise, Daddy,” David said, licking his lips.

“This isn’t the surprise,” Daddy replied. “I thought some ice cream would be nice.”

‘CASE UNSOLVED', David wrote in his detective notes. Daddy started the car, and they continued on their ride. David continued to look for clues as they drove.

“We’re going to the toy shop,” he wrote. “We drove past the baker’s shop. This road leads to the toy shop. The surprise must be a toy." And just as he thought, Daddy stopped at the toy shop.

“Mystery solved!” David said to himself and clapped his hands. He and Daddy went inside the toy shop, and he got to pick a little toy.

“What a great surprise!” David said to Daddy.

“Oh. This isn’t the surprise,” Daddy answered, laughing. “I thought a toy would be nice.”

‘CASE STILL UNSOLVED’, David wrote in his notes. They continued on their ride. David looked carefully for clues. He would find out what the surprise was. He was sure he could.

“I’m still looking for clues,” he wrote. “We just drove past the park. That’s the way to Grandma’s house. We’re going to Gran’s place. My favourite place!” What a lovely surprise!

He wrote ‘MYSTERY SOLVED’ in big bold letters.

They stopped at Gran’s place and went inside. Gran wasn’t home, but she left some chocolate chip cookies on the kitchen table. It had a note that said, “For my dear grandson—HAPPY BIRTHDAY!”

What a surprise! David was so happy. He had solved the mystery at last. He shared his cookies with Daddy. They were delicious.

It was now time to go home. They drove past the park, past the baker’s store, and around the corner. Finally, they were at home. David opened the door, and everyone screamed, “SURPRISE!” David was soooo surprised! All his friends were there, and so was Gran. There were balloons everywhere, and there was cake. There were sweets, and there were many games to play. There were also party packs for everyone.

David was so happy. He gave Daddy a big hug.

“Thank you, Daddy. This is the best birthday ever!”

The End.
