Gran Plumrose and the Broken TV
One afternoon, David, Ellie, and Reva wanted to watch TV. David wanted to watch Robots vs Giants. Ellie wanted to watch Tea Time at Mrs Tootle’s, and Reva wanted to watch The Teddy Dance.
“First to reach the remote!” David yelled. Whoever reached the remote control first could watch whatever they liked.
So, all three children dashed towards the remote control. They all reached it at the same time. Not one of them got it but only managed to send it flying off the table. It flew high up to the ceiling and landed with a noisy clatter.
“Oh no,” David said, picking it up.
He pressed the ‘ON’ button on the remote control, but the TV didn’t come on.
Duh, duh, DUH! They panicked! They had spoilt the TV. Just then, Mummy was walking past.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“Watching TV,” David answered, hiding the remote control behind him.
“Is that remote working?” she asked, looking surprised.
“Mhmm,” he said, his head bobbing up and down.
“Oh wow,” she said and walked away.
“What are we going to do?” David asked.
“Mum and Dad will be so upset!” Ellie said.
“Let’s run away!” Reva suggested.
"No, Reva,” David said with a smile. “We don’t need to do that, but we could buy a new TV,” he said. He thought that was a better idea!
“I have some money,” he said.
“Me too,” said Ellie.
“Me three!!” Reva said, holding up a coin.
They put it all together, but it wasn’t enough to buy a new TV. What would they do?
“I know!” Ellie said. Her eyes brightened up. “We’ll go on a journey to the end of the rainbow. A kind fairy named ‘Gran Plumrose' lives there. I’m sure she’ll help us with all the money we need.”
“Yes,” said David. “That’s a brilliant idea!”
So, they got dressed and packed snacks for the road. It was time to go.
“Where are you going?” Mummy asked.
“To Gran’s place,” they chorused.
She offered to walk them there. David said she was the Gruff Guard Giantess. But she let them stop for snacks at the park, and Reva thought it was really nice of her. They even got fruits for Gran Plumrose – the kind fairy that lived at the end of the rainbow.
Finally, they were at Gran’s place, and the Gruff Guard Giantess waved goodbye. When she was out of sight, all three children started to talk quickly at the same time. They told Gran Plumrose about the broken TV.
“Oh, that’s not a big problem,” she said with a chuckle. “You just need to tell Mum and Dad exactly what happened.”
That seemed too hard, but Gran said it would be okay. And they believed her. After all, she of all people would know.
They had dinner at Gran’s place. When they were done, she took them home in a nice plum-rose carriage.
At last they were safe at home, but they didn’t want to go inside. Slowly, they turned the door handle. To their amazement, the TV was on. They were so happy.
“What happened?” David asked. “We thought we spoilt the TV.”
“No, you didn’t,” Daddy said. “The remote needed new batteries.”
“Thank God!” he said with a deep sigh. “We were going to buy a new TV.”
Mummy thought that was funny.
Daddy said, “If you feel you are in big trouble, I’d like you to come to me first." Then they all sat next to him. He was watching the news. They all watched with him, and for the first time, the news was so much fun.
They were glad they weren’t in trouble after all.
