Half a Picnic

One bright afternoon, David, Ellie, and Reva wanted to have a picnic. They thought it would be fun. There would be cakes and sandwiches and apples and bananas. They would have chocolate and sweets and nice fizzy drinks. Best of all, they would have their picnic in the park.

But they didn’t have any cakes or sandwiches. There were no apples or bananas. They had no chocolate, sweets, or nice fizzy drinks.

“Let’s ask Daddy,” Ellie suggested. “He’ll buy all the things we need. I’m sure he’ll drive us to the park."

They all agreed it was a great idea. Quickly, they ran to meet Daddy.

“Daddy, please give us some money,” David asked.

“What do you need it for?”

“We need cakes and sandwiches, apples and bananas, chocolate, sweets, and nice fizzy drinks,” Ellies replied.

“We’re having a picnic at the park,” Little Reva pitched in.

“That sounds like fun,” Daddy said. “I’ll be happy to help,” he continued, “but first you’ll need to do a few things around the house, then I’ll drive you to the park.”

“That sounds like fun,” David said. “We accept your challenge, Your Majesty," he said as he bowed playfully. “What hills will we climb?”

“What ponds will we wade?” Ellie added, giggling.

“There’s an awful mess in two chambers in this house,” Daddy said.

“What chambers?” the two children asked.

“The David’s Chamber and Ellie’s Chamber," he said. They knew he meant their rooms. “Clean up the mess, and hurry down for your next task.”

They ran to their rooms. Very quickly, both rooms were spic and span. When they told Daddy they were done, he gave them some cake and sandwiches. Ellie, David, and Reva gobbled it up. They didn’t save any for later.

The next task was in Math Land. David and Ellie stood up to mean maths problems. When they were done, Daddy gave them some apples and bananas. Once again, they ate them all up. They didn’t leave any behind.

Then Daddy asked them to tidy the living room.

“Princes and princesses never leave a mess,” David said to Ellie.

So everything was put in its place. Daddy said that was all. They were happy. It was time to go have a picnic. They pranced happily about.

“Will we get some cake and sandwiches at the store?” Ellie asked.

“But you have some, don’t you?” Asked Daddy, a little surprised.

“I gave you some cakes and sandwiches, and I gave you some apples and bananas,” Daddy reminded them.

“Oh, so that was what it was for,” David said.

“Come on, we can still drive to the park,” Daddy said. He picked up some sweets, chocolates, and fizzy drinks, and they all went to the park. They wished they had saved their snacks for later, but it was still fun at the park.
