Pick a Toy - Short Story for Kids

“Who wants to play soccer?” David asked.

“Me!” Ellie said.

“Me!” Reva said.

So, David picked up a ball. He and Ellie started to go outside, but Reva wanted to take out all his toys. He picked up his choo-choo train, his bag of Lego bricks, Fluffy, the teddy bear, Mr. Elephant, and his red toy car. His hands were full. All the toys fell down with a big CRASH! He tried again and again. The toys just kept falling down.

“Reva, you don’t need those toys. We are going to play soccer,” Ellie said.

“But Fluffy wants to watch,” Reva said. “And I may need the other toys.”

“But we only need a ball,” David said.

Reva wouldn’t listen. He wanted all his toys at the same time. He piled them again, and they all fell down. It made him fold his arms, frown, and sit down on the floor.

David and Ellie sat on either side of Reva.

“There was once a little boy. He was travelling to a place called Play Castle,” David said as he started a story.

“He would play soccer with his friends at Play Castle.”

“Just like you, Reva,” Ellie said.

“So, he took his soccer ball and all his other toys. He stuffed them all in a sac. The sac was now very heavy.”

“What a big sac to carry on a long journey,” his mother said.

“I’d like to have all my toys with me,” he said.

His mother shook her head.

The little boy picked up his sack and started his journey to Play Castle. On his way there, he met some children playing.

“Where are you going with all these toys?” they asked him.

“I’m going to Play Castle,” he replied.

“Today is soccer day,” they said to him. “You don’t need all those toys.”

“I’ll take them anyway,” the little boy said and went on his way. But he could only take tinsy winsy steps because his sack was too heavy.

It was soon afternoon. The little boy met an old man who had a pocket watch.

“Where are you going, little boy?” the old man asked.

“To Play Castle,” he replied. By this time, large drops of sweat were rolling down his face to the floor. SPLASH! SPLASH!

“You don’t need all those toys,” he said kindly.

“Yes, I know," the little boy said. “I’ll take them anyway.”

“You will be late,” the old man said, looking at his watch.

“I’ll just walk faster,” the little boy said.

The old man shook his head.

The little boy hurried along, but not for a long time. He was soon tired and stopped to take a rest.

“I’ll take a nap,” he said as he lay down to sleep.

When he woke up, it was already evening. He picked up his sac and went on. By this time, it was very dark. He couldn’t travel any longer. Where would he stay?

A kind woman invited him in.

“Why are you out at this time?” she asked.

“I was going to Play Castle, but it got dark,” he answered.

“The castle will be closed at this time,” she said. “Still, you can go tomorrow to play soccer.”

So, the little boy had dinner and slept. In the morning, he set out to Play Castle. This time, he left his heavy sac of toys behind. The journey wasn’t very long. He was there in only a few minutes.

At the castle, they played soccer and catch. It was a lot of fun. He didn’t need all of those toys after all," David said as he came to the end of his story.

“I guess I can leave my toys behind,” Reva said. He dropped all his toys, except for Fluffy, the teddy bear. Fluffy watched them play, and he said it was a good game.

The End.
