The Brave Little Boy and the Shiny Pony
Today was Reva’s quiz day. He and his friends would answer questions and win prizes. Reva’s knees felt like jelly. He didn’t want to go.
Mummy put Reva in his car seat.
“Don’t worry, Pumpkin,” she said. “It’ll be fun.”
David and Ellie tried to cheer him up. So, they told him a story.
“Once upon a time,” David started.
“Once upon a time, there was a little boy. He was looking for a shiny pony and a toffee apple.
“Where can I find a shiny pony and a toffee apple?" he asked a happy old woman who was hopping on the street.
‘I have a shiny pony, and I have a toffee apple,’ she said, jumping about, ‘and I’ll give them to you, too. But first you must play a little game.’
‘What game?’ the little boy asked.
‘You must guess what’s behind these doors,’ she said, pointing to two plain doors. ‘Is it a toffee, or is it a pony?’ she asked. She was so happy to play.
But the little boy was scared.
‘I don’t like games,’ he said with a scowl.
‘Oh! Then you won’t get a shiny pony, and you won’t get a toffee apple.'
‘But what if it’s empty?’
‘What if it’s not?’
Still, the little boy was scared. So, he walked away without a shiny pony and without a toffee.
A few days later, a boy called Reva came to that same town. He was a very brave boy, even though his knees sometimes felt wobbly. He also wanted a shiny pony and a toffee apple. That was what most little boys wanted in that part of the world. He met the old lady who liked to hop about, so he asked,
‘Where can I find a shiny pony and some tasty toffee apples?’ he asked.
‘I’ve got a shiny pony, and I’ve got many toffee apples,’ said the little old lady, ‘and I’ll give them to you, but, first, you must play a game.'
‘What game? Reva asked
‘There’s a shiny pony behind one door, and there are some yummy toffee apples behind the other,' she said to him. 'If you guess what’s behind each door, you get what you want.’
Reva held out his chest. He made his best guess even though his feet felt wobbly.
‘The shiny pony is behind this door,’ he said, ‘and the yummy-licious toffee apple is behind this door!’
‘You guessed wrong,’ she said as she pushed back the doors.
‘Oh no!’ Reva cried. ‘At least I tried,’ he said, feeling a little sad.
‘Yes, you did and you had fun,’ said the lady, handing him a toffee apple. He said thank you and went home.
Many, many days later, he forgot all about his adventure. But, one afternoon, he wanted to take a walk in a park nearby. As he was walking, he saw a pony. He ran to it and read the note that said,
‘A SHINY PONY FOR A BRAVE LITTLE BOY WHO DID HIS BEST’.
Reva clapped his hands. He took the pony home and rode it every day. The end," David said.
Just as David’s story ended, they reached the quiz fair. Reva couldn’t wait to get in. There he played many games and answered a lot of questions. He won some prizes, and so did his friends. It was a fun day.
The Real End.
