The Cake Contest

The room was filled with the aroma of cupcakes. Mummy, David, and Ellie were baking in the kitchen. Reva was helping out too.

Today was Ellie’s cake contest. They had all made their batter. Mummy put hers into the oven. Then David put his’ into the oven. Last, Ellie put hers into the oven. Then they all waited.

One minute, two minutes, three minutes… ten minutes. Ellie couldn’t wait any longer. She jumped up and walked into the kitchen.

“Don’t open the oven,” Mummy called out.

So, Ellie looked through the glass.

Finally, the cakes were ready. They all put on mittens. Mummy took her cake out. Then David took his cake out. Last, Ellie took her cake out. They set their cakes on the rack to cool.

It was time to taste the cakes. They each cut a few slices to share. But something was wrong. Ellie’s cake was too hard.

“Oh, don’t worry, dear; this is still delicious,” Mummy said.

But Ellie felt sad. She was sure she would lose at the cake contest.

“These are really nice,” David said, but Ellie still felt sad.

Daddy, Mummy, and David put a slice of Ellie’s cake on their plates.

“Off to Cake Kingdom,” David said, “where only the best cakes are had.”

“I’m sure they won’t have my cake. It’s no good,” Ellie said.

“You never know. They may want something fresh and new,” Daddy said.

They all pretended to walk to Cake Kingdom. At Cake Kingdom, a servant was passing by. They stopped him and said, “Please, can you tell Her Majesty we have one of the finest cakes in the kingdom for her to try?” Daddy said, proudly.

“The finest cake, you say?” said the servant, turning up his nose. “We’ll see if it’s as good as you say,” he said as he was about to take a bite.

“PUAH! PUAH! YUCKY! Oh no! This won’t do at all,” said the servant as he spat out the cake. “This isn’t cake; it’s too hard. Her Majesty would never eat such a cake!” he said and shooed them away. “Off you go. Far, FAR, away from Cake Kingdom.”

At this point, Ellie was about to cry, but her Majesty happened to be passing by. She stopped when she saw all the fuss.

“What’s going on here?” she asked.

“Oh your majesty! It’s a horrible cake,” said the servant. “They must leave at once,” he said firmly.

“A horrible cake in Cake Kingdom?” Her Majesty said. “Let me have a taste,” she said. Then she took a slice.

“But your Majesty…” her servant started to say. She raised her hands and told him to hush! Then she took a big bite.

“It’s so tasty,” she said between mouthfuls. Though queens never ate with their mouths opened. She said the cake was too good.

“Why, this isn’t cake,” she said with a smile. “It’s a scone. And it feels so good to have something different.” She even asked for some more. Ellie was glad to give her more scones.

“They are rather nice scones,” Ellie thought as they left the kingdom. “I wonder if they’d fit at a cake contest.” Maybe she should stay home. But Daddy said to go anyway, so they did.

When they arrived, they found out it was a ‘CAKES and SCONES contest’ after all. The judges were done judging, and Ellie won!

“It’s so delicious,” one judge said.

“It was nice to have something different,” said another.

Everyone wanted to make scones, and Ellie was happy to share.

The End.
