The Little Boy Who Couldn’t Wait
Reva threw his ball up in the air. It bounced up and down. This made Reva laugh. It was so much fun. Reva picked up his ball and wiped it with his sweater. He set the ball between Fluffy, his teddy bear, and Mr. Elephant. Then, he ran to Mummy and said, “Can we go to Samuel’s house?” asked Reva. “I’d like to play with him.”
“Not right now, Reva,” Mummy said.
But Reva couldn’t wait. He kept on asking until Mummy said, “Not another word from you!”
This made Reva sad. His eyes swelled with tears. Then David said,
“It’s okay, Reva. She’ll take you later, you know.”
But Reva couldn’t wait.
“What if the both of us go on an adventure?” offered David.
“Can Ellie come?” asked Reva. His eyes brightened.
“Of course!” said David with a chuckle.
Reva loved adventures!
Their adventure was in a colourful town. The town was full of cute little huts. All of them were well built and stood in perfectly straight lines. Everyone said hello, and everyone waited in line. Everyone’s shoelaces were tied, and everything was always in place. The children loved the town and looked around happily. That was until a little boy came running down the road. The boy was in a very big hurry. He ran to the ice cream shop. Even though there was already a long line when he got there, he ran all the way to the front of the line.
“I’d like two scoops of vanilla ice cream,” said the boy.
But the ice cream man didn’t give him any ice cream.
“You have to wait in line,” he said firmly.
So, he went to the back of the line mumbling and grumbling. By the time he got to the end of the line, there were twice as many people as there were before. So, the little boy waited twice as long.
Finally, it was his turn, but all the ice cream was gone.
“Sorry, there’s no more ice cream,” said the ice cream man as he closed his ice cream shop.
The little boy pulled his hair and stomped his feet; still, there was no ice cream for him. At last he went marching home with a frown. Reva, Ellie, and David followed closely behind him. When the boy got home, he burst through the door and banged it really loudly . This woke his grandma up, but he wasn’t sorry. The children watched as he sat at the table for lunch.
“Wait for your food to cool! It’s too hot!” His mother warned as she put a delicious plate of porridge in front of him.
But the little boy couldn’t wait. He took a spoon full of porridge.
“OUUUUUCH!” he cried. His tongue felt sore. He couldn’t eat any more.
“Why won’t he wait?!” asked Reva. He didn’t like the impatient little boy.
Then came a storm, and the little boy couldn’t wait. So, out he ran to play. He jumped and danced in the rain all day.
“AACHOOOOOOOOO!” sneezed the little boy. He was sniffling and sneezing all day long! He didn’t feel good.
Now when his friends wanted to play, the little boy said,
“It can wait. I feel awful.”
And at dinnertime, when his favourite meal was served, the little boy said,
“It can wait. I feel awful.”
So his mummy got some hot chocolate, but he still said,
“It can wait. I feel awful.”
His mummy knew for sure that something was wrong because he had never refused hot chocolate before. She carried him off to bed.
“You should have waited for sunshine,” she said softly.
The little boy lay in bed for many days and couldn't play in the sunshine or in the rain. But he learned how to wait. Finally, he felt fine again, and he was never in a hurry.
It was time for David, Reva, and Ellie to go home. They said their goodbyes and left adventure land. And they were just in time because Mummy said,
“Grab your ball, Reva. Let’s go to Samuel’s house,” and they did.
Samuel and his mother had just got back from the store. There would have been no one to play with if they hadn’t waited.
Reva was glad he had.
