The No Fun Express

It was almost four o’clock. David had his popcorn ready. He couldn’t wait to watch the soccer game. The Cuddly Tigers and the Soft Paw Lions would be playing. Ellie had planned to go to Dorothy’s place. Little Reva was playing with his red toy car.

“Ellie! David! Reva!” Mummy called out. ”We’re going out at four o’clock.” Her teeth shone through her smile.

“Going out! But the game is about to start,” David thought.

He didn’t want to go out. Neither did Ellie. She wanted to visit Dorothy.

“Can we please stay home?” they asked hopefully.

“No,” Mummy said. “Get dressed. It’s almost time to go.”

Then she left the room.

David, however, had other plans.

“There must be a way out,” he thought.

“Ellie,” David called out. The No Fun Express will be here at four o’ clock.

“Ha ha ha,” Ellie laughed, “Oh David, it can’t really be that bad, can it?”

“I’m about to miss a big game,” David said wide-eyed. “What could be worse than that?”

“Mummy and Daddy… I mean,” he continued clearing his throat, “The express driver and the express conductor will soon be here. They’ll want to take us to No Fun City. When the Express Train comes by, we must make a deal with the express conductor. We’ll promise to do the chores she’s been asking us to do. Ellie, you can clean your room, and I will tidy the kitchen.”

“That’s a great idea, David,” Ellie cried. She thought it was sure to work.

They waited patiently at the imaginary bus station, chatting away. David talked about the players.

“The Soft Paw Lions are sure to win,” he said to Ellie.

Ellie talked about the games she would play with Dorothy. It would be fun playing in Dorothy’s toy kitchen.

As for Reva, he went on playing with his toy car.

Soon, the No Fun Express had come. The conductor looked out of the bus.

“All aboard! All Aboard!” She cried.

David rushed forward.

“We won’t be getting on,” he told her.

The conductor was surprised.

“But why?” She asked. “There’s so much fun to be had,” she added with a wink.

“But how can it be fun when it’s a No Fun Express?” he asked with a scowl.

“No fun?” She started to say. Then she read the writing on the bus. It did say, ‘NO FUN EXPRESS!’

“Oh, I see. I’ll fix that at once,” she said, pulling out a sharpie. Then she scribbled the letter ‘W’. So, the sign read ‘NOW FUN EXPRESS’.

“Better?” She asked, smiling.

“I guess,” David said. He wasn’t sure. They all got on. They went past many fun sights. It was an interesting ride.

Finally, they were at NOW FUN CITY. David looked up. His lips dropped. They were at the stadium. Mummy and Daddy had gotten tickets for a live match! Ellie jumped for joy. Dorothy was at the stadium. She was with her Mummy and Daddy. Her dolls were with her too. Ellie was glad she had brought her dolls. They all watched the live game. It was so much fun.

It was soon time to go home. They were glad they had joined the FUN EXPRESS!

The End.
