A Veggie for a Treat

It was breakfast time. Ellie and David were done eating. They were helping Mummy clear out the dining table. Reva was still staring at the vegetables on his plate. He thought they were yucky.

Mummy tried to make him eat his vegetables. She even dipped it in jam, but he dropped it on the floor.

“Try to eat your vegetables. They’ll make you strong,” she cheered.

Reva stared long and hard at his veggies. He wished they would all just disappear. He picked it up and threw it SPLAT on the floor. This time, it went bouncing all over the place. Reva laughed heartily at the mess.

"No, Reva,” cried Ellie, "you shouldn’t play with your food.”

“Open your mouth… ahhh", she said, but he turned his face away. It was no use.

Then David ran over and picked up Reva’s plate as if it were filled with yummy treats.

“Veggies, precious green veggies,” he said.

“Haven’t you heard?” he asked Reva.

“Heard what?” asked Reva with his mouth wide open.

“Your vegetables make you strong enough to fight the vegetable troll. He’s a mean troll that makes little children sick and steals all their treats.” David said as he looked around sneakily for the vegetable troll.

“But I hate vegetables,” Reva whimpered.

“I know. They can be yucky, but there's a trick that can help,” he said.

“What trick?” asked Reva.

“A little bit of sweet and a little bit of bitter work together to make a meal better.” David rhymed.

“What does that mean?” asked Reva.

“You don’t have to eat the veggies alone. Try them with the chips.”

So Reva tried. “That wasn’t so bad,” he thought. And because he had eaten his vegetables, he was stronger. Every time he got stronger, David said the Vegetable Troll got weaker.

Next he tried it with some eggs, and he thought it was nice. He went on pairing his vegetables with the foods he liked. Soon, the troll was too weak to stand and fell to the floor.

They were happy to see Reva’s plate was empty. Breakfast was over, and Reva was glad. Veggies could be fun after all!

The End.
