The dawn revealed clusters of narrowly spaced duplexes with corrugated iron sheets and painted, wooden window shutters, stacked on both sides of the road, occasionally interrupted by a bungalow. Wealthy traders chewed on chewing sticks, watching from the balcony as energetic laborers offloaded their goods from chains of large trucks. Highlife music from loudspeakers filled the streets, and the smell of the River Niger mingled with the aroma of early morning akara. The streets buzzed with activity and ambition.

What I learnt: Building worlds involves describing items that show history and culture, and setting the mood.
